Three productivity-boosting tablets to ask for as holiday gifts

Are you hoping to get a tablet for a gift this season? If so, here’s what to tell someone shopping for you if you want a tablet that’s not just for entertainment but getting work done. Any one of the three will be a winner.

Nexus 7

The latest Nexus 7 is a great, low-priced Google tablet that does well as a work tablet, not just for entertainment. Powered by a 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro, it’s got enough processing power to get real work done. Its 1,920 by 1,200 pixels screen is easy on the eyes, so you can work longer. And it comes with the full gamut of Google’s productivity-boosting apps and services, such as Google Drive, Google Docs and others.

Dell Venue 8 Pro

This 8-inch Windows 8 tablet is the best small-sized Windows tablet you can get. It’s got a powerful Intel 1.8GHz Atom Z3740 quad-core processor (called Bay Trail), 2 GB of RAM, and a spectacular screen, as well as 32GB of storage. It also comes with a microSD slot, so you can easily add more storage with an SD card. As for productivity, it comes with a free copy of Office Home & Student 2013. At some point, Dell will also release a keyboard for it, making Office even more useful.

Surface Pro 2

If someone giving you a gift has deep pockets, consider asking for Microsoft’s Surface Pro 2. When equipped with one of Microsoft’s Touch Cover 2 or Type Cover 2, which are keyboard/cover combos, it’s an ultrabook, not just a tablet. There’s a 10.6-inch screen so you can get real work done. In addition, you get 200GB of free storage on Microsoft’s cloud-based SkyDrive storage service. There are also plenty of ports, including a full-sized USB 3.0. And it comes with a Surface Pro Pen for making up documents, taking notes, and more.
